Fenway Park played host Thursday to a wild finish that Brooks Kriske and the New York Yankees would love to forget.

After taking the lead in the top of the 10th inning, the Yankees called on Kriske, a reliever making just his 11th big-league appearance, to close out the Boston Red Sox. Kriske quickly melted down and threw four wild pitches, with one of the throws allowing the tying run to score.

Kriske also walked Xander Bogaerts and then moved him to third with more wild pitches.

Hunter Renfroe put Kriske and the Yankees out of their misery with a walk-off sacrifice fly.

Kriske's meltdown tied a modern-era record for wild pitches in a single inning, joining Walter Johnson, Phil Niekro, Kevin Gregg, Ryan Madson, and R.A. Dickey, according to Baseball Almanac. Kriske is the only pitcher to throw at least four wild pitches in a single extra inning, according to Stats By Stats.

He's also just the second pitcher in Yankees history to throw four-plus wild pitches in a game, according to YES Network's James Smyth.

"It sucks to be the one to blow it for the team," Kriske said, according to Newsday's Erik Boland.

Chad Green set up Kriske's disastrous 10th inning by giving up a game-tying double to Enrique Hernandez with two out in the ninth. The Yankees now trail Boston by eight games in the AL East.

"Another gut-punch. An out away there," manager Aaron Boone said, per Boland. "It certainly stings on a long night here. But we also have to get over this."

The Yankees optioned Kriske to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following the game.
