The Bobcats are no more; Charlotte officially changes name back to Hornets

The Charlotte Bobcats officially became the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday.

“Today we complete a task that has never been accomplished before, bringing a name back to its original market,” Hornets CEO Fred Whitfield said, via SI.com.

“Our fans are the driving force behind the name [change]. All the data and research indicated that they wanted the name back, badly. It’s a name that provokes a tremendous amount of pride. The Hornets name has been a part of our community for over 200 years.”

The change coincides with the NBA Draft Lottery. The team will not be represented at the event in New York, but could gain a pick if the Detroit Pistons were to fall farther than their current No. 8 spot.

The Charlotte Bobcats went 293-511 with zero playoff wins in 10 seasons.
