Gruden's awful clock management hands victory to Chiefs

Geoff Burke / USA TODAY Sports

The Oct. 2 edition of Monday Night Football will be remembered as the night the Kansas City Chiefs moved to 4-0, but it should be remembered as the one Jay Gruden cost his own team a chance to pick up a signature road win.

Down by three late in the fourth quarter, the Washington Redskins were driving into Kansas City territory before running into a third down, and that's where Gruden inexplicably handed the Chiefs a win on a silver platter.

Gruden took a timeout with 57 seconds left. He then called a deep pass to the end zone on third down, guaranteeing Kansas City an opportunity to possess the ball again with plenty of time left, regardless of whether or not Josh Doctson made this catch.

Washington settled for a game-tying field goal, but Kansas City marched down the field on the ensuing possession before kicking a game-winning field goal in the final seconds.

Truth be told, Gruden fumbled his clock management at the end of the first half, too, calling his first of three timeouts with the Redskins facing a third-and-3 on their own side of the field with 1:41 still on the clock. The 'Skins failed to move the chains on the next play, and Kansas City got the ball back with plenty of time to work with.

Fortunately for Gruden, Harrison Butker missed a 46-yard field goal before halftime. Unfortunately for him and the Redskins, Butker made the one that mattered most.
