Browns briefly considered turning to Johnny Manziel in Jacksonville

Despite giving starting quarterback Brian Hoyer a vote of confidence on Monday, Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine noted that the team considered making the switch to first-round pick Johnny Manziel during Sunday's 24-6 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Browns managed all of 266 yards of offense with Hoyer completing 16-of-41 pass attempts, and turning the ball over twice.

"Nothing's changed," Pettine said, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer. "Each week we make the decision as to if we want to include Johnny in the plan.''

While Pettine said the team's coaching staff never seriously considered making the switch in Jacksonville, he did note that it was discussed.

"It was discussed briefly, but it was a situation where we still wanted to ... at least try to end the game with Brian on a positive note,'' Pettine said.

Even still, Pettine didn't rule out the possibility that Manziel could see an expanded role in the coming weeks.

"Each week when the offensive staff gets together - and I'll jump in with them too - is that they put the plan together, and it's what gives us the best chance to win,'' Pettine said. "So if the situation this week maybe calls for him to play some then that will be the case.

"But we're not going to hit the panic button after one loss. While we know that the quarterback position needed to be more productive, it was more symptomatic of the entire offense.''

The Browns host the Oakland Raiders, the second winless team Cleveland will have faced in as many weeks, on Sunday.
