Blue Jays' Bautista: 'We're still within striking distance of the playoffs'

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

Though a horrendous slide has made postseason contention an unlikely scenario for the Toronto Blue Jays, right fielder Jose Bautista remains optimistic his team can still secure a spot in the playoffs, according to Sportsnet's Arash Madani.

The Blue Jays watched their lead atop the American League East dissipate in recent months, and the club's 6-16 record in August beset the club with a considerable deficit in the wild-card race.

Heading into Wednesday's contest against the Boston Red Sox, the Blue Jays boast just a 0.9% chance of qualifying for the postseason, according to Baseball Prospectus. A lack of offense has fueled their recent slide, as the Blue Jays have compiled a .633 OPS in August, the worst mark in the American League over that span.
