A man had to be rescued seven hours after Barnsley's 1-0 defeat to Fleetwood Town because he fell asleep on the toilet and became trapped in the stadium.

The man, in his early 20s, left the stands at halftime to use Oakwell Stadium's amenities, according to the Sheffield Star's George Torr. He apparently found the seat most comfortable, as he told firefighters he dozed off through the second half and into the night.

He said he had his rude awakening at 10:30 p.m., and after lifting himself from his plastic throne and leaving the cubicle, proceeded to set off an alarm in the dark concourses of the ground.

By the time emergency services made it to the scene, he had climbed on top of a portacabin near the pitch in a bid to get someone's attention.

"We got the call through to attend Oakwell and usually it's just a false alarm," a Barnsley Fire Station spokesperson said.

"But we turned up and saw this young lad on top of the portacabin trying to get our attention."

The man had flushed more than his dignity during Saturday's toilet trance.

"We had to get the ladder to get him down. He had no shoes on and had lost his mobile phone and his hat. He was more bothered about his hat though, he seemed a smartly dressed lad."

Barnsley is in 21st place in League One after Saturday's defeat.

"I know Barnsley lost again but it can't be that bad," the spokesperson said. "It's slightly embarrassing for the lad but it's a lesson for him I'm sure, he'll not be quick to forget it."
