NCAA: We did not rule Silas Nacita ineligible

Jerome Miron / USA TODAY Sports

The Silas Nacita saga has taken an odd twist.

Nacita, who claimed the NCAA declared him ineligible, is having his claim refuted by the NCAA itself.

"The NCAA did not declare Silas Nacita ineligible and Baylor has not requested a waiver for him."

The news comes after the Baylor running back, who roamed the streets before lining up for the Bears, announced that the NCAA showed him the door for committing rules violations. Nacita accepted shelter from a friend instead of choosing to live homeless.

"Because I accepted that offer instead of choosing to be homeless, I am no longer eligible to play football and pursue my dream," Nacita said in a Twitter post. "I had no idea I was breaking any rules, but I respect the decision of the NCAA."

The rule in question states that players cannot receive any benefit that is not available to other students at the university. Although it appears cruel, Nacita appears to have violated that rule by benefiting from the housing given to him in order to allow him a chance to step on the field.

The NCAA isn't too keen on creating special circumstances in an effort to ensure fairness across the board. But in this case, Nacita chose to live under a roof instead of living on the streets.

"I'm devastated, but not defeated," Nacita went on to say. "God is still good an I am beyond blessed to have received the opportunity I did even if it was just a short while.

"I'm just a kid who wanted to go to school and play football. Nothing more."

Despite the NCAA's announcement, Baylor athletic director Ian McCaw released a statement relayed by Stewart Mandel of FOX Sports. The statement all but solidifies the fact Nacita will not be back on the team.

"Silas Nacita will not be a part of the football program moving forward due to the rules violations that impact his eligibility," McCaw said. "We appreciate his contributions to Baylor football and wish him well as he completes his studies."
